Prof. Ludwik Dobrzyński 1941 – 2022
Ludwik Dobrzyński (1941–2022) received the B.S. and M.S. degree in solid state and nuclear physics in 1964 from University of Warsaw, Poland, the Ph.D. in nuclear physics in 1968 and D.Sc. in 1975 from the Institute of Nuclear Research at Swierk.
Since 1963 he was employed at the Institute of Nuclear Research at Swierk. From 1981 to 1983 he was Deputy Director of the Laboratory of Nuclear Methods in Solid State Physics. He then moved to the University of Bialystok where he set up the Laboratory of Solid State Physics. He worked for several international laboratories as a visiting professor, such as Brookhaven National Laboratory (USA), Centro di Studi Nucleari della Casaccia, Italy, University Paris VI, France etc. In 1997 he was invited back to Swierk (named Institute for Nuclear Problems by that time), where he set up the Department of Training and Consulting, now Department of Education and Training. Since his retirement from the University of Bialystok in 2011 he continued working for the National Centre for Nuclear Research (formerly Swierk institute). From 2011-2013 he worked also for the Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski University in Warsaw, Poland. He headed the Department of Education and Training at the National Centre for Nuclear Research till his death.
From 2001 to his death, Prof. Dobrzyński was a member of the Polish delegation to UNSCEAR.
Prof. Dobrzyński has published about 300 papers in international peer-reviewed journals as well as the academic textbook "Neutrons and Solid State Physics" (1994).
Prof. Dobrzyński was a great scientist, great man and great citizen. He was active in the Polish anti-communist "Solidarity" movement and paid a serious price for that. As Solidarity Encyclopedia mentions, "In December 1982 he was dismissed from work for trade union activities. In 1983 an employee of the National Concert Bureau" – accepting, like other dissidents, an unqualified job to earn living.
Many people will remember and miss Prof. Dobrzyński – including many those who never saw him.
